More Online Time Killers V: Colors and Bikes

pocket watch In the latest version of “Online Time Killers,” we present you with one that tests your color perception and another one with simple black and white graphics to challenge your cycling skills.

First up is a website where you can test how well you detect colors. According to the website, “1 out of 255 women and 1 out of 12 men have some form of color vision deficiency.” See if you fall into one of those categories by heading over to the Online Color Challenge. The test is based on the Farnsworth Munsell 100 Hue Test, where the lower the score you get, the better you are at distinguishing colors. Unfortunately, I found out I’m not perfect.

Free Rider 3 features a challenging biking video with simple graphics. See if you can navigate the bicyclist through varied terrain, using your cursor buttons. The up button accelerates and the down button brakes, while the right and left buttons help you navigate your angle. There are various tracks designed by players, or you may design your own. On the ones I tried, I made it through some of the hurdles but have yet to make it all the way through. I just need to spend some more time on it.

We return to our periodic “Online Time Killers” feature of providing links to websites to occupy your time so you do not get any work done. Today’s online time killers feature a Beatles-related webcam and a fun game. Check them out.

Abbey Road Beatles (1) Watch the Abbey Road webcam, which features the famous street crossing from the cover of the Beatles Abbey Road album. If you are lucky, you will catch some people trying to recreate the famous photo. From my time looking at the webcam, it appears that happens quite often.

    (2) In the Impasse online puzzle, you have to navigate the plus sign (+) to the check mark using your arrow keys. Once you see how it works, it seems easy at first, but the screens get more complicated and you have to figure out new ways to achieve your goal, such as realizing you can go off screen. Check it out.

How far did you get in Impasse? Leave your two cents in the comments.

Pocket Watch (1) At this website, Kineticsketch, you may make a work of art from making and dropping different shapes. Cool.

    (2) The Spot the Fake Smile test from the BBC examines if you can look at videos and identify which smiles are real and which ones are fake. I did a poor job, only getting a little more than half correct, but at the end they give some tips for spotting fake smiles. Hopefully, I learned something, as the second time I got 17 out of 20.

How did you do spotting the fake smiles? Leave your two cents in the comments.

Pocket Watch Below are some more online time killers and games you may play for free on your computer, including a new online game that is already a famous iPhone game. Keep an eye on the clock so you do not waste you entire day!

    (1) At this website, answer vocabulary questions to earn free rice for the World Food Programme. You are feeding hungry people while you play, so it is not really a time killer. What are you doing at work that is more important than feeding the hungry anyway? Plus, you might learn something.

    (2) Finally, Angry Birds, the popular iPhone game, is now available online so you may look like you are working on your computer while you play. It just became available this week and only works with the Google Chrome browser for now, but both the game and the browser are free downloads available at the Google Chrome website. Google Ngram Reader & Word History

Google Labs recently released a new tool, the Google Books Ngram Viewer. It allows you to chart the frequency of the use of any words you choose for any time period from 1800 through 2008. CBS Sunday Morning featured a story about the new search tool yesterday.

Google has digitized more than fifteen million books as part of an ongoing project, and the Ngram Viewer uses more than five million books in various languages. Within that set of books, you can see the frequency of any word or phrase you choose, tracing it throughout history, even comparing various words (like “war” and “peace” to find “war” has always been ahead). Try it out and play around with it. Here is the frequency of the four words in the Chimesfreedom subtitle. It is not surprising that the word “life” has been used so much more throughout history than the word “movies.”

You may also narrow the time period and adjust some of the factors. Although it is from a large number of books, one may argue about the accuracy and what conclusions one may really draw. But it is fun. You may even try curse words.

Here is a comparison of two famous movie icons and two music icons. The use of Bob Dylan’s name passed the use of Marilyn Monroe’s name in the last decade, but he is still behind John Wayne and the Beatles.
