“That, My Lad, Was a Dragon” in the New Hobbit Trailer

Director Peter Jackson has released the first teaser trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, which is the second of The Hobbit series following The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. In the new film, Martin Freeman again plays the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins. Check out the trailer.

Benedict Cumberbatch, fresh off his turn in Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013) as well as his work in the TV series Sherlock, plays the dragon Smaug (created through motion capture), although we do not yet hear his voice in this trailer. And yes, that elf is Legolas (Orlando Bloom) from The Lord of the Rings trilogy making his debut in the Hobbit films. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will appear in theaters starting on December 13, 2013.

    Saturday Night Live The Hobbit 4

    After the news came out that director Peter Jackson was splitting The Hobbit into three films, I was among those who were skeptical. Saturday Night Live this week perfectly captured that skepticism by imagining if the director were to split the film into even more parts. Check out the funny video. {June 2014 Update: Unfortunately, the video is no longer available for embedding, but for now you may watch the SNL video for “More Hobbit” on Yahoo.}

    As for me, after seeing The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), I was glad that Jackson made the choice he did. Perhaps I will grow weary of the story by the end of the trilogy, which I did to some extent with Lord of the Rings. But those like me who enjoy the world he has created probably will not mind the fact you get to spend a little more time in Middle Earth. So if you have not yet seen The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, you might want to check it out.

    “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” Trailer Released

    One of the most anticipated movies for the coming year is Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and its trailer was just released. The film will be released in December 2012 as the first of two films adapting the novel, and it looks like anyone who enjoyed The Lord of the Rings movies will also like this one.

    As you can see from the trailer, many of the actors from The Lord of the Rings movies appear, so that the “prequel” feels like a part of the series rather than a different movie altogether. The trailer includes Andy Serkis (Gollum), Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Elijah Wood (Frodo), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), and Cate Blanchett (Galadriel). The Hobbit is set sixty years before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring and follows Bilbo Baggins, who is played by Martin Freeman, on a journey where he discovers Gollum and the ring featured in The Lord of the Rings. I can’t wait.

    In other anticipated trailer news this week, a theatrical trailer for The Dark Knight Rises was also released.
