In October 2012, French radio station TSF Jazz broadcast a live performance by Van Morrison at the Europa Hotel in Belfast, Ireland.     Bob Dylan Among the Romans and the Greeks

    With Bob Dylan releasing his 35th album recently, we think of the man as a legend, perhaps walking among the gods of ancient Greece or Rome. So, today we look at two clips of Dylan among the classic structures of Rome and Greece.

    Well, actually, the Roman architecture in the video below is just a copy because he is in Las Vegas. Check out Pawn Stars‘ Chumlee tracking down Dylan in Vegas for an autograph on one of his classic albums.

    The following clip, though, is set in Athens, Greece. Plus, it includes music. Check out Dylan joining another legend, Van Morrison to play Morrison’s “Crazy Love” as they overlook Athens.

    Jackie Wilson’s Final Performance on Sept. 29, 1975

    The Ultimate Jackie Wilson On September 29 in 1975, Jackie Wilson was performing as part of Dick Clark’s Good Ole Rock ‘N Roll Revue in New Jersey. While singing “My heart is crying” from his signature song “Lonely Teardrops,” Wilson had a heart attack and fell and hit his head. Medical personnel saved his life.  But because of the time it took them to revive Wilson, he ended up in a coma.

    Jackie Wilson’s Death

    Although Wilson recovered slightly, his great voice never spoke again.  He spent the rest of his life in a semi-comatose state, dying on January 21, 1984.

    A few months after Wilson died, Marvin Gaye was killed on April 1, 1984 when he intervened in a fight between his parents and his father shot him. I remember hearing about Gaye’s death that year, but I do not recall hearing anything about Wilson.

    There are a number of reasons why Gaye’s death may have received more attention than Wilson’s death in the news. There were was not many years between the 49-year-old Wilson and Gaye who was one day short of his 45th birthday.  But Wilson seemed less relevant and from another era.

    Gaye was in the middle of a comeback, having won a Grammy for “Sexual Healing” a year earlier. By contrast, Wilson was still performing his classic songs on an oldies tour before spending almost a decade a coma. Also, Gaye’s death was more surprising and violent then Wilson’s, which also may have contributed to the media attention.

    Wilson’s Troubled Life

    Wilson’s coma and death were not the only indignities and problems he faced in his troubled life. He fought drug addiction, and his womanizing led to an angry lover shooting him in 1961.

    During the height of Wilson’s career, he had to play to segregated audiences in the South.  At one point New Orleans police arrested and beat him after they disapproved of one performance.

    Wilson faced other problems. In 1967, he was arrested on morals charges in South Carolina for being in a motel room with a white woman. In 1970, his 16-year-old son was killed by a neighbor during an argument.

    Wilson faced financial difficulties too.  Throughout his career, his manager did not handle money properly and Wilson was left with tax debts and no money.

    In the early 1970s, though, Wilson started turning his life around.  He gave up alcohol and drugs.  And he got rid of the manager who caused his financial problems. But then he had the heart attack. When he died, he was penniless, so he was buried in an unmarked grave in Detroit, like a pauper.

    Yet, he still is remembered. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and his grave is now marked, including the words, “No more lonely teardrops.”

    The Joy in Wilson’s Music

    I absolutely love his recording of “Lonely Teardrops.” I love Jackie Wilson’s voice, and I love to see his performances. You can see the precursor to some of Michael Jackson’s moves in Wilson’s dancing.

    On the Million Dollar Quartet tapes, you may hear Elvis Presley talking about seeing Jackie Wilson sing Presley’s “Don’t Be Cruel,” and you can hear the admiration in Presley’s voice. Wilson’s talents inspired other artists, like Van Morrison who wrote and recorded “Jackie Wilson Said (I’m in Heaven When You Smile).”

    Those artists heard the jubilance and rapture in Wilson’s performances, which explains why he was called “Mr. Excitement.” I like to think that when Jackie Wilson was on stage that last time in 1975, singing about his heart crying, that his final moments of real consciousness were of the type of joy conveyed in the performance below.

    Did you Know Taxi Driver Was Inspired by Astral Weeks?

    Astral Weeks Van Morrison Taxi Driver Director Martin Scorsese once claimed that the first fifteen minutes of the movie Taxi Driver (1976) were inspired by Van Morrison’s album Astral Weeks (1968). How is this violent movie connected to one of the most beautiful albums of all time?

    Sources About the Connection

    One of the main sources for the link is the essay, “Save the Last Waltz for Me,” where Greil Marcus wrote about the documentary The Last Waltz (1978) and hanging out with Martin Scorsese. The essay was originally published in New West (May 22, 1978) and reprinted in Marcus’s book, Bob Dylan: Writings 1968-2010 (p. 79).

    Several Internet sources claim that the “first half” of Taxi Driver is based on Astral Weeks.  These sources may be perpetuating misinformation from Wikipedia based on a later Marcus interview.  Instead, Marcus’s 1978 essay actually asserts that much less of the movie is based on the album.

    According to Marcus’s story, Scorsese put on the album when Marcus was visiting. “Madame George” came on.

    Down on Cyprus Avenue,
    With a childlike vision leaping into view,
    Clicking, clacking of the high heeled shoe,
    Ford & Fitzroy, Madame George
    Marching with the soldier boy behind;
    He’s much older with hat on drinking wine,
    And that smell of sweet perfume comes drifting through
    The cool night air like Shalimar;
    And outside they’re making all the stops;
    The kids out in the street collecting bottle-tops,
    Gone for cigarettes and matches in the shops.

    Scorsese said, “That’s the song.” He explained, “I based the first fifteen minutes of Taxi Driver on Astral Weeks, and that’s a movie about a man who hates music.”

    The First Fifteen Minutes of Taxi Driver

    During the first fifteen minutes of Taxi Driver, Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) drives around the dirty 1970s New York streets.  He applies for and gets the job as a taxi driver. Writing a letter, he describes how he cannot sleep at night and that after his shifts he has to clean off the back seat of his taxi.

    Additionally, we see Bickle going to a pornographic movie.  There, he unsuccessfully tries to strike up a conversation with the woman who works at the concession stand.

    Interpretations of “Madame George”

    Critic Lester Bangs wrote an outstanding essay about Astral Weeks that gives some insight, even though he does not address the Taxi Driver rumor. But he did write about the “desolation, hurt, and anguish” in “Madame George.”

    Bangs called the song, “Possibly one of the most compassionate pieces of music ever made, it asks us, no, arranges that we see the plight of what I’ll be brutal and call a lovelorn drag queen with such intense empathy that when the singer hurts him, we do too.” He added, “The beauty, sensitivity, holiness of the song is that there’s nothing at all sensationalistic, exploitative, or tawdry about it.”

    A number of writers have offered various interpretations of the song “Madame George.” And Van Morrison has reportedly disputed some of the interpretations.  But a piece in Rolling Stone correctly asserts that “Madame George” is “a cryptic character study that may or may not be about an aging transvestite but that is certainly as heartbreaking a reverie as you will find in pop music.”

    The Connection Between Movie and Song?

    So what is the connection between the movie and the ambiguous song? Part of the connection seems to be that both are about lonely men wandering the dirty streets.

    There is heartbreak in both the movie and the song, so the connection seems more of tone than a literal connection. In his essay, Bangs also declined to “reduce” the other songs on the album by trying to explain them.

    You should read Bangs’s essay, but I will follow his lead and not try to explain the unexplainable any further. But the next time you watch Taxi Driver, think of the poetry found in the misery.  And reflect on the beauty of both the film and Astral Weeks.

    Another Scorsese-Morrison Connection and Bonus Information About Taxi Driver: Martin Scorsese later used Van Morrison’s music for the beginning of another movie, Bringing Out the Dead (1999).  That film features some similarities to Taxi Driver.  Bringing Out the Dead opens with the main character driving a vehicle, although in this movie it is an ambulance instead of a taxi, and he is played by Nicolas Cage. During the scene, the music playing is Van Morrison’s “T.B.     Van Morrison: Til I Gain Control Again

    Van Morrison Pay the Devil In addition to all of his other musical accomplishments, the Northern-Ireland-born Van Morrison is one of the greatest living interpreters of American music, be it blues, jazz, or R&B. One of his best albums in recent years is Pay the Devil (2006), where the entire CD is devoted to country music. And a standout track on the album is Rodney Crowell’s “Til I Gain Control Again,” which first appeared on Crowell’s 1981 self-titled album.

    “Til I Gain Control Again” is a beautiful song about love and heartbreak, where the singer realizes that it is too late to plead for reconciliation but is not yet able to let go. So the singer’s request is not for promises or for a future, but merely “I only hope that you can hold me now /Til I can gain control again.” Crowell has explained that the line, “There are some turns where I will spin,” means that the despair will happen again (“I’ll always pass this way again”). There may not be a sadder song about love’s end.

    Crowell wrote the song not long after he first arrived in Nashville, and has explained he wrote it in sort of a “three-day trance” where it was like the song came to him from another dimension. He also noted that one of the reasons he wrote the song was to get the attention of another great songwriter, Townes Van Zandt. An article from the New York Observer has a good interview with Crowell, where the article’s author concludes that “Til I Gain Control Again” is “one of those songs that are strong enough to change your life.”

    Crowell’s version is fantastic, and there are several excellent covers by other great artists. Emmylou Harris was the first to record the song, which appeared on her 1975 album, Elite Hotel. Other artists who have covered the song include Waylon Jennings, Raul Malo, Albert Lee, and Willie Nelson.

    Interestingly, in an interview on Texas Monthly‘s One By Willie podcast, Crowell explained how his favorite version is a studio recording by Willie Nelson where Crowell sang background. Unfortunately, that version is not widely available, appearing only on an out-of-print album sold as a bonus when people ordered by mail Nelson’s IRS Tapes. Instead, Nelson has released several live versions of the “Til I Gain Control Again.”

    Crystal Gayle had the biggest hit with “Til I Gain Control Again,” taking it to number one in 1982. If you want something different, This Mortal Coil does an interesting sort of Goth Emo version.

    It is hard to pick a favorite version, but Van Morrison’s voice and interpretation give a soulful spin on “Til I Gain Control Again.” Although most of the artists who have recorded the song come from the country genre, Morrison does something a little different with the song, taking a brilliant song with so many excellent covers and making it his own.
