As Chimesfreedom previously reported, country singer Marty Brown advanced to the New York rounds of “America’s Got Talent.” Below is a video of what they showed on television from the Las Vegas rounds, including a part of his performance of Keith Whitley’s “When You Say Nothing At All.”

Howard Stern and Howie Mandel noted that they did not like the performance as much as Marty Brown’s San Antonio performance of Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love.” On the other hand, if you saw the entire episode, you would see the show is edited to create drama so it shows the judges saying something negative about everyone. Meanwhile, one of the other competitors noted about Brown, “He makes me like country music.” Most importantly, the judges liked the performance enough to send Brown to the live performances at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. What will Marty Brown do next to win over the judges and America?

    Marty Brown Advances to Radio City Music Hall on AGT!

    Regular readers of Chimesfreedom know we have been following country singer Marty Brown and his comeback trail for some time. After advancing through the first round on America’s Got Talent, he competed in the Las Vegas rounds tonight as his wife Shellie looked on. And Judges Howard Stern, Heidi Klum, Mel B, and Howie Mandel put him through to the live rounds of the competition in New York City.

    Brown sang Keith Whitley’s “When You Say Nothing At All” tonight. I got the impression the judges’ may not know the great song, but they were sufficiently impressed to put Brown through. He did a great job with the song. His performance on America’s Got Talent is not yet available online, although the episode will be available on the America’s Got Talent website (Update: We posted his Las Vegas performance here). But for now here is a video he posted about two months ago of him singing “When You Say Nothing at All.”

    Whose “Hallelujah” Closed “America’s Got Talent”?

    Il Divo Hallelujah

    A lot of readers have been curious about the version of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” played over the ending of America’s Got Talent this week. Because we always want to give our readers information about pop culture, it was Il Divo from their 2008 album The Promise. Il Divo is an operatic “pop” group that was created by Simon Cowell and features the international voices of Sébastien Izambard, Carlos Marín, David Miller, and Urs Bühler. [For more recent uses of the song on America’s Got Talent, see below.]

    We initially thought the version may be by Mark Vincent, the winner of 2009’s Australia’s Got Talent, which would make sense. He was 15 when he appeared on the show and has recorded several albums like My Dream – Mio Visione(2009), which includes his version of “Hallelujah.” But if you listen closely to the end of America’s Got Talent, you will notice there is more than one singer in that version. And if you listen to Il Divo, you should recognize it.

    September 11, 2013 Update: Of course, it would not be a competition with singers unless at some point one of the competitors sings the overplayed and misunderstood “Hallelujah.” So, last night on America’s Got Talent Branden James did a nice job performing the Leonard Cohen classic (see video in comments).

    June 10, 2014 Update: Once again, the song “Hallelujah” made a prominent appearance on America’s Got Talent when this week the 20-year-old Anna Clendening, who explained to the judges her struggles with anxiety and depression disorder, gave an emotional performance of “Hallelujah.” Check it out:

    Marty Brown on WKCT Radio & “Whatever Makes You Smile”

    Marty Brown Whatever Makes You Smile

    Country singer Marty Brown’s wife Shellie reported to us today that the rising America’s Got Talent star appeared today on the Laura Ingraham Show to talk music. Ingraham’s website describes the show: “Up-and-coming country star Marty Brown talks about his experience on America’s Got Talent.” Unfortunately you cannot hear her show on her website unless you subscribe to join the “Laura 365 Revolution,” but you can catch the show for free through WKCT radio, 930 AM (Bowling Green, Kentucky), playing online. If you want to avoid all the politics, Brown is the second guest. The show is supposed to repeat throughout the day, although I have not been able to catch it yet. Check out WKCT’s website. (August 8, 2013 Update: A podcast of the interview is now available on PodcastOne.)

    In the meantime, I have noticed Marty Brown has posted some additional short videos of informal acoustic performances. For those who were touched to see how Shellie got Marty on America’s Got Talent, here is Marty Brown performing a song he wrote for his wife, “Whatever Makes You Smile.” On YouTube, he writes that he wrote the song as a Valentine’s Day present, citing the lines “Like the tin man, the lion, and the scarecrow,/ I’ll follow you down life’s Golden Road./ Whatever makes you smile!!” There is no fancy production, just a man and his guitar giving a nice performance of another excellent Marty Brown unreleased original.

    Marty Brown is an “Undiscovered Treasure” on America’s Got Talent

    Regular readers know that Chimesfreedom is a big Marty Brown fan, with previous posts covering his “lost career,” his recent albums he recorded on his own, and recent videos of an original and a George Jones tribute. Hopefully, tonight was another step in his comeback when he appeared on the first episode of season eight of America’s Got Talent singing Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love” (a song we covered previously too). Check out his moving performance at the San Antonio auditions below.

    The audience reaction gives away the result before any of the judges say a word. Unlike another former rising country star Julie Roberts who failed to win over any of the judges on The Voice this season, Marty Brown is moving on. Howard Stern called Brown an “undiscovered treasure,” but we have known he is a treasure for decades. And we are thrilled he is getting the attention he deserves.

    In the video, you will also see how Brown’s wife Shellie Brown tricked him into appearing on the show. Marty is lucky to have the support of Shellie, who has given us previous reports on Marty’s comeback. We wish them both well in the next round on America’s Got Talent, although regardless of what happens, we hope some music executives saw tonight’s show.

    In the excellent baseball documentary The Glory of Their Times (1977), someone once described seeing Babe Ruth when he was a pitcher before he played for the Yankees. After giving a glowing account of the Babe’s arm, the listener paused and then replied, “Wait until you see him hit.” After the judges tonight praised Brown’s cover of the Dylan song, I wanted to say, “Wait until you hear him sing his own songs.” Knock it out of the park Marty and Shellie.
