Glen Campbell & Stevie Wonder: “Blowin’ in the Wind” (Duet of the Day)

I am not sure who was the person who thought up the idea to pair up Glen Campbell and Stevie Wonder on a Bob Dylan song, but I hope they received a large paycheck. In this video, Wonder and Campbell find a lot of soul in the Bob Dylan classic, “Blowin’ in the Wind.”

It is unclear where the video is from, but it may be from when Glen Campbell had a TV show. They do a wonderful job, playing off each other and not getting drowned out in the production.

Stevie Wonder can make any song his own, and he does a fantastic job. But Campbell is a surprise here when he hits the high notes in a verse. Together the two make beautiful music.

Sam Cooke: “Blowin’ in the Wind”

    Blowin Wind

Sam Cooke, who was born on January 22, 1931, was one of the century’s greatest singer-songwriters.  He also was an electric performer, and while there are not many videos of him singing live available on YouTube, the one below captures him singing Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind.”

Not surprisingly, Cooke puts his own stamp on Dylan’s song.  Check it out.

Bob Dylan Records “Blowin’ in the Wind”

bob dylan blowin' in the wind On July 9, 1962, Bob Dylan entered Columbia’s Studio A in New York and recorded “Blowin’ in the Wind.” It would be a year, though, before the recording was released on his album The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan. The song and album were a breakthrough for Dylan after his unsuccessful self-titled first album, with many crediting the song and album as a turning point for Dylan’s songwriting.

Most people, however, first heard the song from a source besides Dylan’s 1962 recording. Besides those who were lucky enough to hear him sing it in a performance, many first heard it in another voice. Before Dylan’s version of the song was released, Peter, Paul, and Mary had a pop hit with the song, which became a civil rights movement anthem.

This video captures Dylan performing the song on TV in 1963.
