Marty Brown Interview on WBKO

Marty Brown Interview

Country singer and America’s Got Talent performer Marty Brown recently appeared on Bowling Green, Kentucky television station WBKO. The video does not include Brown performing, but it is a nice interview for us fans. In the segment, Brown talks about his new single, “Whatever Makes You Smile,” which Brown wrote as a Valentine’s Day present for his wife. He also discusses how they made the video for the song, and explains how one can know all they need to know about him just by watching his mom and dad dance. Check out the interview.

Football Song: “At My Weakest Moment”

Seahawks helmet We hope everyone has a safe Super Bowl Sunday. There are not a lot of songs about football, but Chimesfreedom favorite Marty Brown wrote a love song that begins with a football story. The song, “At My Weakest Moment,” was inspired by Tony Romo’s fumble in the Wild Card playoff game against Seattle in 2006.

With the Dallas Cowboys trailing the Seahawks 21-20 with 1:19 left in the game, Dallas kicker Martin Gramatica prepared for an easy 19-yard field goal to win the game. Romo received the snap to hold the ball for the kicker, but he fumbled the ball on the snap. Romo then tried to run the ball into the end zone but he was tackled. The Seahawks won the game.

Singer-songwriter Marty Brown is a Cowboys fan, even though he hails from Kentucky. He was despondent after the Dallas loss, and he used that heartbreak as inspiration to connect to another kind of heartbreak in his song “At My Weakest Moment,” which appears on his independently released CD All-American Cowboy. Brown imagined himself in Tony Romo’s place, wondering if his lover would still be there for him at his weakest moment.

Apparently, Brown did not want to directly memorialize a low moment for his team (or perhaps he needed a one-syllable name in the lyrics). He changed the team in his song from his Cowboys to the Colts. Check it out.

Of course, everyone has their ups and downs. The heartbreaks do not last forever, and neither do the celebrations. After Seattle beat the Cowboys in the 2006 playoffs, they found their own disappointment in the next round of the playoffs, when they lost on an overtime field goal to the Chicago Bears. Overcoming that “weakest moment,” in 2014 they made it to the Super Bowl and won.

10 Reasons Marty Brown’s “I Don’t Want to See You Again” Is One of the Great Kiss-Off Songs

I was happy to see Marty Brown‘s recording of “I Don’t Want to See You Again” is now on YouTube. Regular readers know Chimesfreedom is a fan of Marty Brown’s music, and this song is certainly in my top ten Marty Brown songs and one of my favorite songs of all time.

“I Don’t Want to See You Again” appears on Brown’s sophomore album from 1993, Wild Kentucky Skies. The album is full of songs written by Brown that I love, but “I Don’t Want to See You” is one of only two songs on the album not written by Brown. It is easy to see why he chose this song written by Jackson Leap, as it suits his voice perfectly. Why do I love the song so much? Well, here are ten reasons.

    Wild Kentucky Skies

    1. The opening line tells you everything you need to know about the story: “Don’t look so surprised,/ I told you I’d say goodbye/ if you couldn’t just make up your mind.” Perfect.

    2. In true empowering kiss-off fashion, the singer wants true love but realizes that the object of his song cannot give him the love he wants and deserves.

    3. The singer’s lover apparently has not been a good one, but she is still surprised by the news.

    4. The singer not only says goodbye, but he does not want to see or feel his lover again, which is the best way to end a bad relationship.

    5. The singer knows that his love will regret losing him (“When your teardrops finally come. . . “).

    6. The singer wants it all.

    7. The great country guitar riff playing throughout the song.

    8. Marty Brown yells “Babeeeee” and then “Yeeeeeeeeah” near the end. The latter is a scream of freedom.

    9. Although there is an underlying sadness of two lovers parting ways, the song sounds joyous, capturing the hope for the future.

    10. Marty Brown sings it.
